Guardiola: Liverpool a top team without Coutinho

14 Enero 2018

It's the truth when he said he left Liverpool only for one club, Barcelona, and there was a moment when we had to accept that.

"That was unlucky, it was an open game".

"I knew when it will come up again in this transfer window, and it came up massively that it will be very difficult to use him in the second part of the season".

"On the pitch and off the pitch, we have experienced the beauty of this club and its fans. If we do it in this window, I don't know", he explained.

But, despite having the player under contract until 2022, Klopp insists Liverpool had no alternative but to sell as Coutinho was set on Barcelona and his continued commitment to the team could not be guaranteed. Did I think I could still use him?

"When Phil wasn't in the team we still played great football and we have still amazing players who can score goals - the likes of Mo (Salah), Sadio, Roberto". Mahrez's current deal with the Foxes will expire in 2020.

"But that doesn't matter at all actually because we've got Salah, ah Mane Mane and Bobby Firmino but we sold Coutinho". That is it. There was no other option. But for me? It's business as usual. "I would love to see Klopp sign David Meyler as he is from Cork like me and he's nearly as big a Liverpool fan as me". It's all about the atmosphere in the club. And finally, to the most important people of Liverpool - the Liverpool supporters.

"There will never be a player that can make me retire or kick me out of here". Names such as Thomas Lemar and Riyad Mahrez have been rumoured to move to Anfield, but Thierry Henry believes Jurgen Klopp may already have such a player on his books. He also tipped Adam Lallana to be an adequate replacement in Coutinho's midfield position for the rest of the season. "The club is trying everything to do things differently".

"We don't have to replace him", said Klopp. "Gini Wijnaldum. Not everyone thought 'fantastic idea', but a lot of other clubs wanted him and we have him". I felt they couldn't nick games, but they did so against Everton in the FA Cup last week, with Van Dijk heading the winner on his debut. That's not how it will be.

He might just be the man to take over the helm of affairs as Coutinho departs. They are a team who, with three or four touches they arrive in the finishing area. Now he will be looked upon to slot seamlessly in Barcelona's midfield and lessen Iniesta's burden. He netted a dozen goals in 20 appearances this season before the transfer. "And that is all he does." marveled Henry. He needs time for proper training of course.

Klopp admitted that they cannot convince "all players" to stay but that they must ensure to show them that "there is no need to leave from the sports side". "It looks really good, cool".
