It has been discovered that a performance feature called speculative execution present on nearly all modern computing system to optimise performance. One vulnerabilty, named Spectre, was found in AMD and ARM-based chips, too. The main thing is to be even more vigilant than usual when it comes to clicking on links or doing anything else that could result in malicious software being installed on your device.
But implementing the fix is expected to significantly affect the performance of the computer, making some actions up to around 30% slower. "I think it will affect the way that processors are designed".
January 3, 2018: Intel and other chipmakers publicly disclose the security flaw.
"Recent reports that these exploits are caused by a "bug" or a "flaw" and are unique to Intel products are incorrect".
Intel announced that it has already started issuing updates to five-year-old CPUs or newer, which should include the Ivy Bridge generation, which came out in 2012, and later.
Meanwhile, the company also deployed Kernel Page Table Isolation (KPTI) to counter the third variant known as Meltdown by "better protecting sensitive information in memory from other software running on a machine".
Then, in November, Krzanich sold off $39 million of stock for a tidy profit of $25 million, according to CNBC.
It goes without saying that all the impacted parties are working to release patches as soon as possible. The former only seems to affect Intel CPUs, with reports that the latter is on all three. There's no need to worry now.
Urging every user to apply available security patches immediately, Mr Stree Naidu, the Asia-Pacific vice-president of cyber security services firm Cato Networks, said: "Not patching the vulnerability not only puts the data in the chip memory at risk, but also provides an entry point to critical servers and the entire corporate network". "Google Cloud is architected in a manner that enables us to update the environment while providing operational continuity for our customers".
Security researchers revealed the existence of Meltdown and Spectre on Wednesday.
"Contrary to some reports, any performance impacts are workload-dependent, and, for the average computer user, should not be significant and will be mitigated over time", the company insisted. The platforms such as Microsoft's Azure and Amazon EC2 will be mostly affected. While this may seem to be the case for Meltdown, Spectre is a more widespread and deep-rooted flaw and there is no fix for it as of now.
