Young England side holds Brazil to draw

15 Noviembre 2017

ENGLAND followed up their goalless draw against Germany with another disciplined defensive display to keep Brazil at bay last night, with Gareth Southgate's youth policy again showing some promising signs.

"We have world class players and team leaders in Neymar, Willian and Thiago Silva".

"It was his personal decision and I think it will be easier for him to flourish at PSG, whereas that was more complicated with Lionel Messi at Barcelona or would have been at Real Madrid with Cristiano Ronaldo". He's played against one of the hottest players in the world [in Neymar] and has done really, really well against him.

"He is a great person too, I am in touch with him regularly and I am also convinced he will have an outstanding World Cup".

"I thought the defensive back line were phenomenal", the West Ham goalkeeper told ITV Sport.

But while England can keep planning for the global showpiece, the Republic of Ireland suffered heartbreak at the hands of Christian Eriksen and Denmark.

However if Brazil have serious designs about reclaiming the trophy next summer they need to be able to solve puzzles like this.

Southgate believes his players face a tougher task against a side he deems to be the "best team in the world".

"I think I was given the job because I understand the pathway and to join the whole thing up", the former England's Under-21s boss, and head of elite development at the Football Association, said.

The hosts spent most of the match watching the ball being pinged around, although for all Brazil's intricate patterns the visitors were disappointing in the final third of the pitch where Neymar and Jesus barely had a sight of goal.

Ronaldinho broke English hearts in Shizuoka as David Seaman's error sent Sven Goran Eriksson's team crashing out of the tournament. And it's Coutinho who almost sneaks in an opener for the visitors, but his low strike is saved well by Hart.

But at least both sides have qualified for Russia next year, unlike four-time champion Italy.

Earlier, the AFA confirmed that Aguero "had a blackout and was taken (to hospital) so routine examinations were made only as a precaution".
