Joe Girardi out after 10 years as New York Yankees manager

27 Octubre 2017

Joe Girardi is out as manager of the New York Yankees after 10 years.

"I want to thank Joe for his 10 years of hard work and service to this organization", general manager Brian Cashman said.

During Girardi's tenure, the Yankees reached the postseason six times, including three American League East titles (2009, '11-12) and three Wild Card berths (2010, '15, '17).

"Everything this organization does is done with careful and thorough consideration, and we've decided to pursue alternatives for the managerial position", Cashman said in a statement.

It was suspected that Girardi might not return, with the pull of family potentially being too great after so long on the job. Once, over a half-century ago, Yogi Berra lost Game 7 of the 1964 World Series to the Cardinals and got fired.

Girardi will always be remembered as a coach of the Yankees who brought passion, drive, energy, and excitement to the game.

If Cashman is looking for a manager don't forget he likes dealing with people he is familiar with.

Like Girardi and all members of his coaching staff, Cashman's contract also expires on the same date. "I'd like to thank the Steinbrenner family for believing in me and giving me this wonderful opportunity".

Should the marriage be over for whatever reason, the Yankees would be looking for a manager for the first time since following the 2007 season when Joe Torre turned down a one-year offer to return.

"With a heavy heart, I come to you because the Yankees have decided not to bring me back", Girardi said in a statement released by his agent, Steven Mandell. "It's a hard day for me", he said then. His 910 regular-season wins rank sixth in franchise history, trailing Joe McCarthy (1,460), Joe Torre (1,173), Casey Stengel (1,149), Miller Huggins (1,067) and Ralph Houk (944). He had sounded unusually nostalgic when discussing the atmosphere at Yankee Stadium during the playoffs. God has been good to me. You know that when you go in.

"I love what I do", he said.
