Diamondbacks go for record 10th straight road win

17 Setiembre 2017

Paul Goldschmidt #44 of the Arizona Diamondbacks is congratulated by teammates after he hit a two-run homer against the San Francisco Giants in the top of the first inning at AT&T Park on September 16, 2017 in San Francisco, California.

Bumgarner had allowed a Peralta single on the game's first pitch then struck out the next two hitters before Goldschmidt hit his 37th homer of the season and fifth against the Giants.

On a night when Zack Greinke said he didn't have his best stuff the Arizona Diamondbacks ace more than made up for it by hitting his spots.

Their magic number to clinch a postseason berth is now down to just six games. "It's frustrating for everybody".

All indications are that the Giants have no plans to rebuild the team during the offseason, but rather reload and try to compete again in 2018.

Bumgarner and Crawford are two of the most important players on the roster for the foreseeable future if the goal is to compete, so the Giants desperately need them to play as well as they can.

Greinke held the Giants to two hits in x shutout innings while getting the best of Madison Bumgarner in a pitcher's duel.

Pence was coming off a difficult series against the Dodgers in which he twice allowed pop-ups to fall between himself and the second baseman.

It has been a difficult and soul-sucking season for everyone in the Giants clubhouse, and one unfortunate consequence is that all the failure has made Pence's relentless optimism harsh on the ear. Hernandez's leaping, home run robbery Sept. 3 against the St. Louis Cardinals will stand as the one play worth remembering from an outfield defense that has hovered somewhere between embarrassment and ineptitude. "Their rotation is really good". All their guys have stepped up.

Greinke also recorded two of the Diamondbacks' seven hits against Bumgarner, a pair of doubles.

Greinke (17-6) struck out eight and gave up one walk as he moved into a three-way tie for the major league lead in victories with Clayton Kershaw and Zach Davies. Saturday's 2-0 win was their ninth in a row on the road, equaling the mark of the 2002 club. Right-hander Jeff Samardzija and lefty Madison Bumgarner both pitched well enough to win, but received a total of just two runs of offensive support.

And perhaps his success at the plate allowed him to let his defensive abilities shine brighter.

"Nothing Goldy does surprised me". He's a special player.

Strikeouts were a theme of Ray's outing, especially late, when in the fifth inning, he would reach 200 total for the second consecutive season. "He does special things at special times". The only Diamondbacks runs came off the bat of Paul Goldschmidt. Only Colorado Rockies RF Carlos Gonzalez (19) has more. He lost his fifth straight decision and is winless in last seven starts. The Giants' two hits matched a season low.

The Giants played a clean game, at least.

The Giants celebrated Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda's 80th birthday on Saturday with an on-field ceremony and a video tribute. Giants greats CF Willie Mays, 1B Willie McCovey and RHP Gaylord Perry were on hand for the on-field festivities.
