Premier League: Manchester United hope Jose Mourinho's second-season formula yields results

11 Agosto 2017

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is hoping Luciano Spalletti can bring success to Inter Milan.

The 21-year-old Frenchman faces stiff competition for one of the two or three places in support of Lukaku, with Marcus Rashford, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard among Mourinho's other options.

"I want them to win trophies for the Interisti, and when I say Interisti what I mean is us".

Jose Mourinho was in charge for the latter campaign and, despite securing Europa League, EFL Cup and Community Shield glory, along with Champions League qualification, knows they have to do better in the league.

According to English publication the Daily Mirror, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager wants one more signing, and he could sign one of these five alternatives after giving up on the Welshman and the Croatian.

The Portuguese gaffer is still in the market for at least one more signing following the arrival of Nemanja Matic.

The article claims that Inter Milan had initially demanded that Manchester United include Anthony Martial as part of the deal for Perisic - but the Red Devils have no intention of selling the France international. Two influential figures in Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are no longer around, but the former's time in Manchester had more than run its course while the latter's career may yet be prolonged.

Inter have held firm on their asking price of €50-55m for Perisic and won't drop below that, though the Red Devils never went above €45m, including bonuses.

As for Perisic, there have been no further developments in his potential switch to United since Inter were out in China for their pre-season tour in mid-July.

Speaking ahead of the match, he said: "Well if he's playing tomorrow, no I wouldn't think of that, it's because he's in the coach's plans and the club's plans, because he also has that motivation to continue at Real Madrid".

United did not finish lower than third in the Premier League era under Sir Alex Ferguson, but since his retirement have ended seventh, fourth, fifth and sixth.
